Botswana
In Botswana, Africa’s wilderness and landscapes still reveal their original beauty, as the country remains something of an insider’s secret. Botswana is shaped by savannah, bushland, semi-desert and wetlands. The great scenic highlight is undoubtedly the Okavango Delta, which, with its immense area of 20,000 km², is also known as the world’s largest oasis. Alongside its varied flora, it is above all the extraordinary wildlife that makes Botswana a safari destination beyond compare. Above all, the chance to encounter the Big Five at close quarters is truly exceptional.
Best time to travel
The best time to visit Botswana is during the dry season from May to early October. Rain is rare, and wildlife gathers around the few remaining waterholes, making game viewing especially rewarding. In the Okavango Delta, which reaches its highest water levels from July to September, you can explore the world’s largest inland delta by boat. Savour the wilderness, watch great herds of elephants and enjoy temperatures of 25–30 °C. The rainy season lasts from late October to April. Yet this season has its own appeal: from November to March in particular, the Kalahari Desert bursts into bloom, drawing wildlife and their young. Chobe National Park and the Boteti River are also ideal for birdwatching at this time of year.
