Portugal
Portugal lies in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, framed by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the east and north. Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe and is rich in traditions, cultural treasures and varied landscapes – from green mountains and golden plains to beautiful river valleys and idyllic sandy beaches. The cosmopolitan capital, Lisbon, with its striking architecture, is steeped in history and full of authentic local character. The enchanting Algarve, with its dreamlike beaches, fishing villages and dramatic rocky coastline in the south, is a wonderful destination for a beach escape.
Best time to travel
Portugal’s climate is generally temperate maritime. This means warm summers and comparatively mild winters. There are, however, noticeable climatic differences between north and south. In northern Portugal, particularly around Porto, the climate is generally cooler and wetter than in the south. As a result, summers here are moderately warm, while winters are wet yet mild. Even the central European winter can be a lovely time to visit the Algarve.
