Vumbura Plains offers a wonderfully varied range of experiences that children will love. Particularly special are the so-called “Bush Buddies” — experienced hosts who entertain younger guests with activities such as tracking animals, drumming, painting and making pizza, while ensuring they engage with nature in a playful, safe way. Older children and teenagers can also learn to pole a traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) or join exciting safari activities such as wildlife viewing and boat trips.

For families, there are shared moments to enjoy, from evenings beneath the stars to cultural gatherings in a traditional boma. The undisputed highlights, however, are experiences such as private safaris, mokoro excursions, boat trips and birdwatching. For spectacular views over the Okavango Delta, take a helicopter flight or a hot-air balloon ride, which usually sets off at sunrise. Sample the local cuisine, with ingredients sourced from nearby farmers. Specialities include the traditional ground root of the Okavango water lily, “Tswii”, and “Phapata” bread, baked over the campfire in the morning.

Best time to travel
The best time to visit the Okavango Delta in Botswana is from April to October. These months fall within the dry season. From May onwards, the delta reaches its greatest extent as water slowly flows in from the Angolan Highlands, transforming the region into a lush oasis. Peak water levels are reached in the months of July and August . This draws a wealth of wildlife, including elephants, buffalo and an impressive abundance of birdlife.
Guided walking safaris and game drives are also ideal during these months, as the vegetation is thinner and animals are easier to spot. The cool, dry conditions and the high concentration of wildlife make this season perfect for nature and wildlife lovers. Clear air also offers superb conditions for photography and birdwatching.
