Once around Sri Lanka with the whole family - A travelogue by Sonja Wohleser
Sri Lanka is colorful, loud, quiet, wild, green, warm - and simply special. Anyone who has been there once understands why many people want to return immediately. We were fascinated by the country right from the start: with its mixture of temples and tea plantations, palm beaches and national parks, spices in the air and the warmth of its people.
Our journey took us from the west coast via Kandy to the highlands, on to the wild south and finally to the east coast. Every place was different and each had its own magic.
We saw elephants, took a train through the highlands, stayed in boutique hotels, ate curry, walked barefoot through the sand and collected many little moments that we will never forget.
Traveling Sri Lanka with children was less complicated than we thought - and more beautiful than we had imagined!
Arrive & take a deep breath-our start at Uga Riva
Anyone traveling with children knows that a relaxed start to a trip is worth its weight in gold. That's exactly why we deliberately started our round trip through Sri Lanka at the beautiful Uga Riva - and we couldn't have chosen a better place.
As soon as we entered the stylish boutique hotel, housed in a charmingly restored colonial house from the 19th century, the stress of everyday life fell away from us. The combination of colonial flair, modern details and a lot of love for design creates an atmosphere in which you can immediately relax.
Our suite was spacious, stylishly furnished and so quiet that you could even hear the birds chirping. Between the palm trees, infinity pool and extensive garden, it was wonderful to switch off, while the attentive team looked after us with genuine warmth.
The Uga Riva also spoiled us with its culinary delights: fresh, local ingredients, lovingly prepared but never overloaded. Just our taste.
For me, it was the perfect place to start my Sri Lankan adventure with my family and get a first feel for this unique country.
The Uga Prava - ending by the sea
To round off our trip, we treated ourselves to a few days on the east coast at Uga Prava, the latest pearl in the Uga collection. And what can we say? It was love at first sight. Inspired by the shape of a shell (Prava actually means shell), the modern design blends harmoniously into the surroundings. Everything feels open, light and at the same time secure - with these incredible views from the bed directly out to sea.
A real highlight is the spectacular infinity pool - the longest in the region - with an unobstructed view of the ocean. Just a few steps away is a beautiful, quiet beach, almost deserted, perfect for walking, swimming or simply putting your feet in the sand.
Uga Prava was also a real culinary experience: the cuisine is fresh, creative and with a lot of sensitivity for regional ingredients - nothing overloaded, but fine, well thought-out dishes that perfectly match the relaxed setting.
But what really made this place special for us were the people. So warm and attentive with genuine Sri Lankan hospitality. Exactly what makes a trip unforgettable.
One thing is certain for us: we won't forget this trip in a hurry. Sri Lanka, we'll be back!
