My Journey Through Magical Egypt

Landscapes, temples & stories in Egypt - A travel report by Anja Strehle.

Egypt had been on our list for a long time - mainly because of its history. At the same time, we wanted to experience the country in such a way that the trip felt good and wasn't too rushed.

It quickly became clear that a trip on the Nile combines exactly that. Many of the most important places are located directly along the river, and instead of constantly traveling on, you naturally move from one highlight to the next.

It is precisely this rhythm that makes the difference. The days usually start early with sightseeing - often more intense than you would expect - and in the afternoon, things quiet down again. As the ship sails on, the landscape outside changes and you have time to think again about the stories of gods, hieroglyphs and legends...route-historia-nile

Our route - immerse yourself in antiquity

Our journey begins in Luxor, probably the most impressive open-air museum in the world. On the east side of the Nile, the sprawling Karnak Temple with its monumental columned halls is impressive - expanded over the centuries and once the religious center of ancient Egypt.

The Luxor Temple, on the other hand, appears more compact, but unfolds an almost magical atmosphere, especially in the evening hours, when the illuminated colonnades make history tangible.

Early the next morning, we head to the West Bank - one of Egypt's most fascinating regions. In the Valley of the Kings, you dive deep into the world of the pharaohs. The elaborately painted burial chambers, which are over 3,000 years old, tell of the belief in life after death and the enormous effort that went into the journey to the afterlife.

Despite the low season, you should expect crowds of visitors here - but a good guide makes all the difference and brings the stories behind the tombs to life.

As the ship glides leisurely southward, the landscape changes: groves of palm trees, small villages, and scenes of daily life along the Nile pass by. In Edfu, one of Egypt’s best-preserved temples awaits—the Temple of Horus. What makes it particularly fascinating is that the complex offers a very clear picture of how temple rituals were conducted in ancient times, as many of the structures are almost completely intact.

Another stop is Kom Ombo, unique for its double temple complex dedicated to two gods—the falcon god Horus and the crocodile-headed Sobek. This rare division is reflected throughout the architecture. A visit in the evening hours is particularly atmospheric, when the light bathes the ancient walls in warm hues.

Finally, in Aswan, the pace slows noticeably. A felucca ride on the Nile offers a change of perspective—you glide gently past islands and granite cliffs as the sun slowly sets. The temple complex of Philae, which was painstakingly relocated to an island after the construction of the Aswan Dam, rounds out the journey with an almost magical atmosphere.

Good to know: Sightseeing tours usually take place early in the morning (approx. 4–5 hours) to avoid the heat. But don’t forget your hat and bug spray! 😉

Tip: Experience Egypt from all sides

A Nile cruise can be ideally combined with our Egypt round trip. The route starts in Cairo with the Pyramids of Giza and the new Grand Egyptian Museum, before continuing to Luxor for the Nile cruise.

From there, the journey takes you along the most important ancient sites to Aswan. Afterwards, a stay at the Red Sea provides a relaxing finale - the perfect balance to the more intensive sightseeing. ✨

And then we go home with a heavy heart. What remains? Many impressions of ancient gods, exciting rituals and moments that made the trip special. 📜✨
