Best time to travel

The best time for game drives in South Luangwa National Park is from May to October. During these dry months, animals retreat to the few reMayning water sources, creating exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing. The sparse vegetation makes it easier to track lions, leopards and large elephant herds that are characteristic of this region.
Game drives in the early morning and late evening are especially rewarding at this time. The dry, clear air also creates perfect conditions for photography and makes these months the ideal time to travel for safari enthusiasts.

That said, every month in South Luangwa National Park has its own distinctive appeal. From October to April, for example, this is the best time to spot the rare wild dogs. In March, when the Luangwa River is in flood, it is the ideal time for a boat safari.

    Destination region

    South Luangwa

South Luangwa National Park, one of Africa’s most important protected areas, is known for its rich and abundant wildlife and its beautiful landscapes. Of its roughly 60 mammal species, many are endemic, such as Cookson’s wildebeest and Crawshay’s zebra.

The region offers families the perfect blend of adventure, nature and unforgettable safaris. Game drives in open safari vehicles offer the chance to observe elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo and many other animals in their natural habitat. Night drives are particularly impressive, offering the chance to spot nocturnal creatures such as hyenas and owls. For adventurous families, guided walking safaris offer a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the park’s flora and fauna. Young and old alike can learn a great deal about nature and wildlife, and discover animal tracks in the sand. Another highlight is visiting the Luangwa river valleys, where hippos and crocodiles can be observed in the water.
