Rubondo Island Camp

About the hotel

Rubondo Island Camp lies in the south-western reaches of Lake Victoria, offering a unique wilderness experience for families in search of something a little different. The subtropical rainforest is full of life: the hum of insects, the calls of birds and the rustle of leaves become your constant companions. Elephants, monkeys, eagles and more than 300 bird species inhabit the forest. For the duration of your stay, this is paradise. With just eight eco-friendly chalets right on the lakeshore, the camp promises absolute privacy and an intimate atmosphere. The accommodation is built using traditional methods and local materials. Enjoy local and international cuisine as you explore the untouched natural surroundings. Its setting and exceptional service make Rubondo Island Camp an unforgettable experience.

Kids & Teens

Children aged five and above are warmly welcomed at Rubondo Island Camp. At present, there is unfortunately no dedicated children’s programme. That said, the generously designed family cottage offers plenty of comfort and fun. Please note that chimpanzee trekking has a minimum age requirement of twelve years. Children must also be at least 16 years old for walking safaris.

Experiences & Activities

At Rubondo Island Camp, a wide range of experiences awaits, from exciting boat safaris where you can observe hippos and crocodiles at close quarters to guided walks through the tropical rainforest. Particularly impressive are the chimpanzee treks, offering the chance to encounter one of our closest relatives. The chefs spoil you with homemade dishes, including delicious bread, cakes, biscuits and sorbets. Whether overlooking the lake or beneath the stars, every meal comes with a remarkable view.

Best time to travel

The best time to visit Rubondo Island on Lake Victoria in Tanzania is usually from June to October. These months fall in the dry season, offering ideal conditions for exploring the island and its diverse flora and fauna. Temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is low, making it easier to observe chimpanzees and other wildlife. This is also an excellent time for boat trips on Lake Victoria and walks through the island’s dense rainforest. Clear skies and mild temperatures make this a wonderful time to experience Rubondo’s unspoilt nature and striking landscapes.

    Destination region

    Rubondo Island

Rubondo Island, a unique national park on Lake Victoria, is known for its unspoilt nature, rich wildlife and adventurous activities. It is home to chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus monkeys, elephants and more than 300 bird species, including fish eagles and African grey parrots. This remote island offers families a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure amid breathtaking scenery.

A boat trip around the island offers the chance to spot hippos, crocodiles and a wide variety of birdlife. Guided walks through the dense forest bring encounters with elephants, giraffes and antelope, while teenagers can learn a great deal about the island’s flora and fauna. A particular highlight is fishing on Lake Victoria, not least alongside chimpanzee trekking. Kayaking excursions offer an exciting way to explore the shoreline and enjoy the lake’s tranquillity. In the evening, families can unwind in a hammock at the comfortable lodges and admire the sunset over the lake, while listening to the sounds of the African wilderness.
