Greystoke Mahale

Tanzania – Mahale Mountains

Secluded romance | wilderness adventure | unspoilt nature

Greystoke Mahale

About the hotel

Greystoke Mahale lies at the foot of the densely forested Mahale Mountains, directly on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. This exclusive camp offers just seven rustic yet luxurious bandas, each built from reclaimed dhow wood from the lakeshore and thatch. As a result, every building is unique and carries its own story. The rooms are open in design and offer breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding forest. Guests enjoy delicious meals and private dinners on the beach. At Greystoke Mahale, you can feel the love of detail and, above all, a deep love of nature. Those who come here will leave only reluctantly. The combination of seclusion, comfort and extraordinarily beautiful nature makes Greystoke Mahale a truly unique escape.

Greystoke Mahale welcomes families with children aged eight and above. They can take part in many of the exciting activities, explore the natural surroundings and roam the lodge’s beaches. Exciting family day trips also leave lasting memories. For safety reasons, however, chimpanzee trekking is only permitted from the age of twelve.

Greystoke Mahale

in our eyes

Greystoke Mahale is the ideal place for families seeking adventurous experiences and luxurious relaxation in a remote wilderness setting. The combination of unique chimpanzee safaris, exceptional cuisine and outstanding service makes every stay unforgettable.

Best time to travel

The best time to visit Mahale Mountains National Park in Tanzania is from June to October. During these months, it is usually the dry season, which makes it easier to observe the park’s famous chimpanzees, as they stay closer to water sources. Temperatures are warm yet pleasant, and rainfall is low, creating ideal conditions for treks through the dense rainforest. At this time, boat trips on Lake Tanganyika are also possible without rough waters, inviting visitors to enjoy the park’s striking scenery. Clear air and dry weather ensure excellent visibility and a wonderfully comfortable experience in one of Africa’s most remote and beautiful wilderness areas.

    Destination region

    Mahale Mountains

The Mahale Mountains, on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania, are known for their spectacular natural beauty, rich wildlife and, above all, their chimpanzee population. This remote region offers families a unique adventure in one of East Africa’s most unspoilt landscapes.

One of the Mayn attractions is chimpanzee trekking, where families have the rare opportunity to observe these fascinating primates in their natural habitat. Hikes through dense forests and along mountain trails offer breathtaking views and the chance to discover exotic plants and animals.

Lake Tanganyika invites visitors to swim, kayak and snorkel in its crystal-clear waters, where the richness of the underwater world is truly captivating. Boat trips on the lake offer a relaxed way to explore the beauty of the surroundings. In the evening, families can put their feet up in comfortable lodges or tented camps and enjoy the sunset over the lake while listening to the sounds of the African wilderness.
