Tswalu The Motse

About the hotel

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve lies within a 114,000-hectare private nature reserve on the border with Botswana. The landscape in the southern Kalahari, with its glowing red dunes, is not only breathtakingly beautiful but also promises extraordinary wildlife encounters: black rhino, pangolins, the famed Kalahari lions and, of course, the delightful ground squirrels are among Tswalu’s most fascinating inhabitants. In addition to the Loapi Tented Camp, Tswalu offers the luxury accommodation of The Motse with nine legae (Setswana for “home”), as well as Tarkuni Homestead - a villa with five suites. With its gardens, natural building materials and wildlife-drawing waterhole, The Motse is a paradise of its own within the natural wonder of the Kalahari. In this secluded setting, families enjoy every comfort while remaining deeply connected to nature.

Kids & Teens

Tswalu is the perfect destination for a family escape, opening up an entirely new world for children of every age. The Tswalu Junior Ranger programme has been thoughtfully created to inspire young guests with the natural world. They learn archery, tracking and animal tracking skills. Bush walks are also offered, along with horse riding, crafts, pizza and biscuit baking, and much more. Children of all ages may take part in private safaris. The large pool overlooking a waterhole offers a wonderful place to swim, sunbathe and relax between game drives and activities.

Experiences & Activities

The rich natural world of Tswalu Kalahari offers an array of captivating experiences: game drives, walks to petroglyph sites, learning the art of tracking, horse riding and encounters with habituated meerkats - all certain to inspire wonder. Equally impressive are the stargazing experiences and interactive encounters with nature that make the adventure unforgettable. For moments of relaxation, wellness treatments invite you to unwind completely. Dinner at Klein JAN offers an introduction to South Africa’s cultural richness, expressed in every nuance of flavour.

Tswalu The Motse

in our eyes

A stay at Tswalu is, without question, one of the most special experiences a family can share. Discovering the Kalahari in all its fascination is a true highlight. Even the approach by plane is a unique experience in itself. While this is not a classic Big Five experience, Tswalu reveals Africa’s beauty in a remarkably special and exclusive way - in this vast reserve, encountering another safari vehicle is almost impossible.

Best time to travel

The best time to visit the Kalahari is shortly after the rainy season, from March to May, as well as from September to November. In spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), temperatures are milder and conditions are ideal for desert safaris. These months bring pleasant temperatures, less dust and the chance to fully appreciate the flora and fauna of the Kalahari.

That said, even the hot summer months (December to Februaryy) are well worth considering for a visit. After the long dry season, the region stirs back to life with the first rains. The landscape turns green once more and countless plants begin to bloom.
