Mhondoro Lodge

South Africa – Welgevonden Game Reserve

private game reserve | luxurious safaris | family-friendly

Mhondoro Lodge

About the hotel

Mhondoro Lodge is set within the malaria-free Welgevonden Game Reserve. The rooms are styled in "African chic", blending African character with contemporary European elegance. The lodge has its own waterhole hide for guests, connected to the main building by a tunnel. A wonderful opportunity to get remarkably close to the wildlife, unnoticed, and capture truly memorable photographs. The suites feature expansive terraces overlooking the African bush, as well as living rooms with fireplaces. The Spa Suite is a secluded sanctuary, inviting deep relaxation with soothing treatments and a freestanding bathtub overlooking the waterhole.

Kids & Teens

For children, there is a separate playground protected by fences, making it inaccessible to elephants. A dedicated programme is also available. Children are welcomed on arrival with a gift pack including an educational booklet and pencils. They can join walks in search of insects or take part in tracking activities, followed by making plaster casts of the prints they find. Clay modelling, archery and stargazing are also on offer. Children under six may not join scheduled game drives when other guests are present. If a family books a private game drive, children under six are welcome to join, as the experience can then be tailored to younger guests.

Experiences & Activities

South Africa is a leading destination for safari experiences. Mhondoro Lodge is an ideal base for thrilling game drives, guided walks and boat excursions. An excursion is also offered to the two rock art sites in Welgevonden Game Reserve, where the oldest paintings are believed to be thousands of years old. Unwind with yoga sessions and restorative spa treatments, or gaze at the stars through a telescope. Standout experiences include watching wildlife from the underground waterhole hide and taking cultural excursions to local communities. Look forward to exceptional African cuisine and award-winning local wines.

Mhondoro Lodge

in our eyes

The waterhole, connected directly to the main building by a tunnel, immediately reveals itself as one of the camp's true highlights. Rarely do you have the chance to be this close to the animals. The lodge combines luxurious comfort with a family-friendly atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for families. Despite its secluded setting, you can expect an extensive wellness offering, while the culinary experience leaves nothing to be desired. Wine lovers will be delighted by the award-winning wines.

Best time to travel

At Welgevonden Reserve, in South Africa’s Waterberg region, the best time to travel is from May to September. During these months, the weather is dry and cool – ideal for extended safaris and wildlife viewing. The thinner vegetation during the dry season makes it easier to spot wildlife, including lions, elephants and rhino. Guided walks through the reserve also offer exciting experiences, while the clear air and cooler temperatures create ideal conditions.

The months from October to April have their own appeal too, bringing warmer weather and, although summer (December to Februaryy) can bring occasional rain, this is still a beautiful time of lush green landscapes and the chance to see newborn animals.

    Destination region

    Welgevonden Game Reserve

Welgevonden Game Reserve, around a three-hour drive or a one-hour flight from Johannesburg, is a malaria-free reserve in Limpopo Province. The reserve is home to the Big Five as well as rarer species such as African wild dogs and brown hyenas. Welgevonden is known for its strong focus on conservation and sustainable tourism, with exclusive privately run lodges offering guests unforgettable safari experiences. Its varied landscapes range from open grasslands to mountains and rivers, creating a richly diverse habitat for flora and fauna.

Game drives in open safari vehicles give families the chance to encounter the Big Five – lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhino – as well as many other wild animals in their natural habitat. Particularly memorable are the guided bush walks, where children can learn a great deal about the region’s native flora and fauna. In the evening, the day can draw to a gentle close around the campfire beneath the African night sky, sharing the stories of the day’s adventures.
