Solio Lodge

Kenya – Laikipia

Rhino | luxurious seclusion | sustainable comfort

Solio Lodge

About the hotel

Solio Lodge lies in the heart of the Solio Game Reserve, between Mount Kenya National Park and the Aberdare Mountains. This 19,000-hectare sanctuary is dedicated to protecting endangered white and black rhino, with more than 200 living here. Encountering these gentle giants is an unforgettable highlight. It is not uncommon for guests to spot up to 40 rhino at once. The five luxurious cottages are equipped with every modern comfort and nestled within a beautifully wild setting. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows ensure uninterrupted views of the landscape at every moment. Each cottage features an en-suite bathroom, rain showers, a private veranda and a fireplace. The main area includes an elegant restaurant, lounge and spa, perfect for unwinding after exhilarating safari adventures.

Kids & Teens

Children and teens are warmly welcomed at Solio Lodge. Guides share fascinating insights into the animals and their habitat, while teaching young guests what they need to know when spending time in the bush. From thrilling game drives to guided walks, the adventure of the African wilderness is sure to capture every child’s imagination. A babysitting service is available, and child-friendly menus can be prepared on request. The lodge is also flexible when it comes to mealtimes for younger guests.

Experiences & Activities

Solio offers activities including day and night game drives, guided nature walks, horseback safaris and helicopter flights over the spectacular landscape. You can also join mountain biking excursions, visit a nearby coffee or flower farm, or indulge in the spa. Other highlights include horseback safaris and watching rhino in their natural habitat. The chefs at Solio Lodge love experimenting with new dishes using ingredients from the lodge’s own garden. Expect fresh salad platters, flavourful vegetable dishes and homemade chilli dressing.

Solio Lodge

in our eyes

For us, Solio Lodge is the very definition of an authentic, high-end safari lodge. You can truly feel how vital conservation is here – the dedication to protecting rhino left a deep impression on us. The chances of seeing the “Big Five” are also exceptionally high. For those seeking luxury with a deeper sense of purpose, this is the ideal place. A singular experience in a breathtaking landscape, and wonderfully combined with its sister lodges in Kenya.

Best time to travel

The best time to visit Laikipia in Kenya is between June and October as well as December and March, when the dry season offers optimal conditions for wildlife viewing. During these months, the animals are easy to spot and the weather is pleasantly warm. The months of April, May and November also have their own appeal, as the rainy season turns the landscape lush and green and the region feels quieter, although access to some areas may be limited by the weather.

The months of July to October are especially rewarding when the Great Migration is taking place in the neighbouring Masai Mara, while December to March is ideal for birdwatching and clear conditions. Laikipia is a fascinating destination year-round, with a moderate climate and distinctive experiences in every season.

    Destination region

    Laikipia

Kenya’s Laikipia region is home to one of East Africa’s most important conservation areas, stretching across a vast savannah landscape. It is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes and the rare Grevy’s zebra, as well as the black (“black”) and white (“white”) rhinoceros. Laikipia offers distinctive safari experiences, where visitors can enjoy both traditional game drives and walking safaris. Particularly memorable are experiences such as tracking lions with expert guides or visiting local villages to learn more about Samburu and Maasai culture.

For families, Laikipia is an exceptional destination, with special programmes such as the “Juneor Ranger” and interactive wildlife encounters that will captivate children too. For many, the highlight is the chance to stay in luxurious, eco-conscious lodges and watch wildlife directly from the terrace.
