Segera Retreat
Kenya – Laikipia
Segera Retreat
About the hotel
Set in the foothills of Mount Kenya, with sweeping views across the Laikipia Plateau, the exclusive Segera Retreat welcomes you in style. At Segera, where elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo and gazelles roam freely, entrepreneur Jochen Zeitz realised his vision of creating a small and deeply exclusive lodge – a sanctuary of calm and restoration in the heart of the African savannah. The villas and main house sit along an important wildlife corridor used by animals moving towards feeding grounds. Each house and villa has been thoughtfully designed with its own distinctive character. This luxury retreat places great emphasis on sustainability, as well as social and financial fairness, reflected in its 4C concept: Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce. Adding to its appeal is Segera Retreat’s remarkable art collection, displayed throughout the interiors and gardens, and unlike anything else in Africa.
Kids & Teens
Segera is ideal for families with children and toddlers, as its elevated setting makes it a malaria-free area. The staff are wonderfully child-friendly, and the villas offer generous space for privacy and relaxation. Children can also move freely throughout the retreat, as Segera is fenced and wild animals cannot enter. Alongside bespoke game drives, children can enjoy activities such as collecting eggs, playing football, arts and crafts, and even making pizza.
Experiences & Activities
Head out on thrilling game drives and explore the wilderness with an experienced guide. Unwind by the beautiful pool or in the exclusive spa – Segera is the perfect place to switch off far from the rush of everyday life. Guests can also explore the extensive collection of contemporary African art. A particular highlight is sleeping beneath the stars on a special platform known as the "Nay Palad Bird Nest". The delicious meals are prepared using local produce. Ingredients come from the retreat’s own herb and vegetable gardens, trout from nearby streams, and free-range beef from Boran cattle.

Segera Retreat
in our eyes
“I had a farm in Africa.” – This famous line from “Out of Africa” could easily describe our own experience at Segera. The luxurious hammocks on the private sun terrace and the sweeping views across the savannah feel almost cinematic. Interiors created by the renowned design group “Life”, combined with fresh, individual dining in imaginative settings, create a truly special atmosphere. Segera offers discerning families not only an exceptional experience, but is also ideal for longer stays. Art lovers will be captivated by the impressive collection of contemporary African art, which adds yet another layer to the stay.
Best time to travel
The best time to visit Laikipia in Kenya is between June and October as well as December and March, when the dry season offers optimal conditions for wildlife viewing. During these months, the animals are easy to spot and the weather is pleasantly warm. The months of April, May and November also have their own appeal, as the rainy season turns the landscape lush and green and the region feels quieter, although access to some areas may be limited by the weather.
The months of July to October are especially rewarding when the Great Migration is taking place in the neighbouring Masai Mara, while December to March is ideal for birdwatching and clear conditions. Laikipia is a fascinating destination year-round, with a moderate climate and distinctive experiences in every season.

Laikipia
Kenya’s Laikipia region is home to one of East Africa’s most important conservation areas, stretching across a vast savannah landscape. It is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes and the rare Grevy’s zebra, as well as the black (“black”) and white (“white”) rhinoceros. Laikipia offers distinctive safari experiences, where visitors can enjoy both traditional game drives and walking safaris. Particularly memorable are experiences such as tracking lions with expert guides or visiting local villages to learn more about Samburu and Maasai culture.
For families, Laikipia is an exceptional destination, with special programmes such as the “Juneor Ranger” and interactive wildlife encounters that will captivate children too. For many, the highlight is the chance to stay in luxurious, eco-conscious lodges and watch wildlife directly from the terrace.
