Best time to travel
The best time to travel along the Mekong varies by region: in Vietnam, the dry season from December to April is ideal for boat journeys; in Cambodia, travel is possible year-round, with the rice fields at their most beautiful in August; and in Laos, the most pleasant period is between November and Februaryy, when the weather is cool and dry. The rainy season from May to October can make travel more challenging, particularly in Laos. It is advisable to check the weather conditions in the specific region before travelling.
Your journey aboard the Gypsy Mekong begins either in Luang Prabang (Laos) or the Golden Triangle (Thailand). Arrival and departure are conveniently arranged by air, for example via Bangkok.
Mekong River
The Mekong is Southeast Asia’s longest river, stretching for around 4,350 kilometres from its source on the Tibetan Plateau in China to its mouth in the South China Sea in Vietnam. Along the way, it flows through six countries: China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The river is a lifeline for millions of people and plays a vital role in the region’s agriculture, fishing and transport. Vietnam’s Mekong Delta is particularly renowned for its floating markets and distinctive river culture.
