Best time to travel
At Welgevonden Reserve, in South Africa’s Waterberg region, the best time to travel is from May to September. During these months, the weather is dry and cool – ideal for extended safaris and wildlife viewing. The thinner vegetation during the dry season makes it easier to spot wildlife, including lions, elephants and rhino. Guided walks through the reserve also offer exciting experiences, while the clear air and cooler temperatures create ideal conditions.
The months from October to April have their own appeal too, bringing warmer weather and, although summer (December to Februaryy) can bring occasional rain, this is still a beautiful time of lush green landscapes and the chance to see newborn animals.
Mhondoro Villa can be reached from Johannesburg Airport in around three hours by car or via a flight transfer.
Welgevonden Game Reserve
Welgevonden Game Reserve, around a three-hour drive or a one-hour flight from Johannesburg, is a malaria-free reserve in Limpopo Province. The reserve is home to the Big Five as well as rarer species such as African wild dogs and brown hyenas. Welgevonden is known for its strong focus on conservation and sustainable tourism, with exclusive privately run lodges offering guests unforgettable safari experiences. Its varied landscapes range from open grasslands to mountains and rivers, creating a richly diverse habitat for flora and fauna.
Game drives in open safari vehicles give families the chance to encounter the Big Five – lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhino – as well as many other wild animals in their natural habitat. Particularly memorable are the guided bush walks, where children can learn a great deal about the region’s native flora and fauna. In the evening, the day can draw to a gentle close around the campfire beneath the African night sky, sharing the stories of the day’s adventures.
