My trip to Oman: sandy beach, mountain scenery and sunshine at Six Senses Zighy Bay
In November, I had the great opportunity to visit the Six Senses Zighy Bay in Oman, a place that immediately captivated me. Nestled between rugged mountains and a tranquil sandy beach, the resort is located on the Musandam Peninsula, just a two-hour drive from Dubai - and yet it feels like a completely different world. If you are looking for peace, nature and a very special hotel experience, this is the place for you.
Adventure meets wellness at Zighy Bay Oman
Zighy Bay is built in the style of a traditional Omani village: made entirely from natural materials, charming, authentic, but with the comfort of a real luxury resort. The 82 villas are scattered around the extensive grounds, each with its own pool, sun loungers, a small summer house and - particularly practical - bicycles, which we were able to use to move around the resort freely. Everything is of high quality in an unagitated, relaxed way, nothing seems overloaded, but simply harmonious.
I was thrilled by the opportunity to reach the resort by paragliding. What a spectacular way to arrive! Right from the start, you experience tingling sensations and adrenaline paired with a unique view of the region. Alternatively, you can take a jeep down a winding road to the bay. The view is at least as impressive.
When it came to the scenery, I couldn't decide which was more beautiful: the long, pristine sandy beach with the turquoise blue sea right on our doorstep or the dramatic mountains that rise up just behind the beach. On the first morning, I was actually faced with the question of which way to point my sun loungers. Now that's what I call a real luxury problem.
A Taste of the Maldives in Oman
Surprisingly, Zighy Bay had a certain Maldivian vibe to it, but with an Omani twist. The combination of beachfront villas with direct access to the sea, the fine sand beneath my feet, the crisp air, and the gentle sound of the waves reminded me of a previous family vacation on that island nation in the Indian Ocean. What’s more, both places strip things down to the essentials; nothing feels artificial or over-the-top—exactly what I value so much when traveling.Add to that the laid-back barefoot chic for which Six Senses Resorts are known: no dress code, no hustle and bustle, just plenty of natural charm, understated luxury, and a cozy, feel-good atmosphere. The beachfront villas are perfect for a relaxing vacation. In the mornings, I’d jump from my cozy bed into the refreshing water; the spacious rooms offered plenty of room and places to retreat, and we enjoyed a high degree of privacy.
Zighy Bay had a calming effect on me, and for various reasons. I took leisurely bike rides around the resort. I watched movies under the starry sky at the open-air cinema. On the beach, I strolled barefoot in the warm, soft sand, with no destination or time constraints weighing on me.
A varied program of events and exciting activities for families
You’ll never get bored at Zighy Bay. There’s plenty for families to discover and experience. The resort features spacious areas for volleyball and soccer, and for the kids, Chaica’s Kids Club offers a colorful program full of fun and creativity. From rock painting and treasure hunts to cupcake baking, there’s something for every child aged four to ten. Young guests can even feed the resort’s own goats—a real highlight for the little ones!
For teenagers aged eleven and up, there’s Al Feetean’s Club, which is tailored specifically to this age group with adventure hikes, archery, slacklining, and bodyboarding. The bicycles that come with every villa provide even more freedom of movement and fun.
For the whole family, there’s Cinema Paradiso, an open-air cinema right on the beach where you can watch movies together under the starry sky. A real experience that makes for a relaxing and special evening.
Amid all these experiences, you’ll naturally also find time for relaxing moments at the spa with a view of the mountains—ensuring your vacation strikes the perfect balance between action and relaxation.
One culinary highlight after another
The dining at Zighy Bay is just as diverse and exquisite as the resort itself. Several restaurants offer culinary experiences that make every day a new delight. At the Spice Market, you’ll find a fine selection of Middle Eastern dishes that impress with fresh ingredients and authentic spices—here, you can taste Oman in every bite. The Summerhouse is the meeting place for foodies who value creative cuisine and high-quality ingredients. International dishes are given a modern twist and served with care.
The Bedouin dinner in the Shua Hut right on the beach is a true experience: traditional Arabic specialties served in a cozy atmosphere under the open sky create authentic moments and offer a glimpse into the regional culture.
In addition, ever-changing pop-up restaurants surprise guests with special themes and new taste experiences. The culinary journey remains exciting and varied every day, offering everything from relaxed beach menus to festive evenings.
Why I love it so much...
Zighy Bay won me over with its unique combination of nature, understated luxury and warm atmosphere. For me, it's exactly the kind of luxury that doesn't push itself to the fore, but can be experienced through the people, the design and the tranquillity that a place radiates.
I was able to switch off and recharge my batteries with the relaxed vibe of Zighy Bay. From bicycles to a great kids' program, everything has been thought of to make the guests' stay as pleasant and carefree as possible. I am very grateful for this wonderful vacation at Zighy Bay and am already looking forward to seeing you again!
