Sandra with family on Soneva Jani

Island Hopping in Paradise

Maldives

Content

From island to island in the MALEDIVES - Sandra Wimmer visited this dream destination for us with her family.

The Maldives - known to many as a romantic hideaway - turn out to be a true Eldorado for families on closer inspection. Between turquoise-blue waters and powder-white beaches, a world full of impressions, experiences and memories awaits young and old alike. If you choose the right resorts, you will find much more than honeymoon flair and couples tying the knot. Instead, there are shared adventures, nature that will amaze you and little moments that will touch your heart. That's how we experienced it on our island hopping tour - and it was even more magical than we had dreamed.

Soneva Fushi - an absolute highlight for the whole family

Soneva Fushi, the bedrock of barefoot luxury, is located in the heart of the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Here, sustainable standards and casual elegance are combined with a backdrop that takes your breath away. Surrounded by dense jungle, white sandy beaches and crystal-clear water, we enter a world as a family that immediately feels like our second home. Our two-bedroom water villa was not only a dreamlike oasis of retreat with absolute privacy, but also gave us an endless view of the shimmering sea every morning - in keeping with Soneva's philosophy of "Embrace nature's majesty".

Whether cycling through the lush jungle or visiting the hotel's own ice cream and chocolate room, every moment on the island was unique and offered that certain something. We were particularly impressed by the culinary experiences: Each restaurant was in a different spectacular location, such as perched on stilts over the ocean or hidden in the heart of the jungle. But what made Soneva Fushi truly exceptional was the incredibly warm staff, whose loving attention, especially for the children, made us feel right at home in the middle of paradise. And - hard to believe - Soneva Fushi even has a zipline where guests can whizz through the treetops. We didn't need to be told twice!

Our highlights: Breakfast with our feet in the sand and an offer that leaves nothing to be desired. The well thought-out children's program, ball sports such as tennis, pickleball and padel as well as unusual offers such as glass blowing or literature workshops. "No news, no shoes " - this motto is definitely lived out here.

Maldives Fact Check

  • Getting There: You can easily reach the Maldives via Malé International Airport. The resorts then offer a transfer by seaplane or speedboat—this part of the journey alone is a little adventure in itself!
  • Best Time to Visit: The climate in the Maldives is tropical, warm, and humid—perfect for an island getaway! The dry season from November to April is considered the best time to visit, but the months from May to October also have their own charm. We traveled in June and had mostly sunny days, despite the monsoon season.
  • Activities: Sit back and relax—a stay in the Maldives takes care of itself: whether you’re actively snorkeling, enjoying water sports, and watching fascinating dolphins, or simply indulging in moments of pure relaxation at the exquisite restaurants and luxurious spas.
  • Children: The Maldives with a baby or toddler? Absolutely! Because whether you’re reading comfortably on a sun lounger or enjoying a gourmet candlelit dinner, a huge sandy playground for your children is always right at your feet :-)

Velaa Private Island – ultra-luxurious and super-sporty

Velaa, which translates to “turtle,” enchanted us from the very first moment! On this idyllic, lush island, we were immediately immersed in a serene atmosphere of well-being. With just 47 luxurious accommodations, Velaa offers plenty of privacy, allowing us to enjoy the island’s beauty in complete relaxation. While the villas are very stylish and equipped to the highest standard, the restaurants impress both culinarily and architecturally. The service and the warm staff ensured that we felt at home and welcome at all times.

Velaa is a true paradise for families! We laughed and ran around during family tennis and tried to find the right stance during our first golf lesson (!!!). The water sports center left nothing to be desired with Seabob diving, jetpacks, and hoverboards. Our children were thrilled by the lovingly run Kids Club, where they painted their own coconuts and planted them on the island, among other activities. They’re already looking forward to seeing their coconut palms when we return! With a water park, talent shows, and pirate ship adventures, boredom didn’t stand a chance.

Velaa is the perfect blend of luxury, countless sports activities, and a relaxed atmosphere—the perfect finale to our island-hopping tour in the Maldives!

The Diversity of the Maldives

When island-hopping in the Maldives, it quickly becomes clear that every island has its own unique charm. The nature-filled, laid-back barefoot experience at Soneva Fushi in Baa Atoll, the dazzling, distinctive overwater beauty of Soneva Jani in Noonu Atoll, or the sporty exclusivity of Velaa Private Island—each destination is one of a kind. It’s not just about luxury, but about the countless experiences waiting to be discovered on each island.

Ultimately, the Maldives are so diverse that it’s almost impossible to choose just one island. They’re all breathtakingly beautiful—it just depends on what families are looking for in paradise. We’re incredibly grateful for this trip and are already looking forward to our next visit!
